Lignano Sabbiadoro
Situated halfway between Venice and Trieste, Lignano rises on a peninsula that leans out on the calm Adriatic Sea, among the mouths of the Tagliamento River and the Lagoon of Marano.
From the 1700's to the early 1900's Lignano was an anonymous fishermen village without connection with the mainland. At the beginning of the 1900's in this area of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region there were only dunes and pinewood, reeds and grassy beaches. In less than a century the peninsula became a place rich in attractions, a city of hotels, villas, bungalows, residences with three principal resorts:
Lignano Sabbiadoro, located at the farthest end of the peninsula, called so for the characteristic color of its thin sand, is the historical centre of the resort with a rich commercial proposal that characterised the whole main street, with shops, cafè, restaurant, boutiques, amusement arcades and small typical squares.
Lignano Pineta, built in the 50's, is characterised by the original spiral development of the main streets, so that when walking through it you are always plunged into green areas, as indicated by the architect Marcello D'Olivo,. It is rich of hotels, villas and apartments enclosed in the green pinewood. An important commercial area, called the "Train", with shops, cafè, restaurants cuts from north to south the green spiral of Pineta.
Lignano Riviera, enclosed in a rich vegetation between the beach and the mouths of the Tagliamento River, is the quitest area of the Lignano peninsula. It is rich of important structures like the Spa, the Parco Zoo Punta Verde, the Golf Club and modern tourist harbors.

Porto Vecchio, located in the historical part of Lignano Sabbiadoro, was built in the 30's as a military seaplane base. It accomodates a fishing fleets, a motor-ship landing stage, the harbour office. Marina Punta Faro is situated in a strategic position, on the east side, at the extremity of the peninsula, where the Marano Lagoon waters meet the Adriatic Sea. Thanks to the technical centre, the tourist services and the Sporting Club with its large swimmingpool, Marina Punta Faro is one of the most important centres for pleasures boats. In Lignano Riviera, on the beautiful and charming mouth of the Tagliamento river is located Marina Uno, the first harbour in Italy to be built only for tourism. Sailing up the river there is Marina Punta Verde, characterised by the original structure of the docks and houses, inspired by the fishermen's houses of Marano Lagoon, or immersed in the green around small lakes.
Besides the sea and the beach, in Lignano there are six amusement parks for the fun of adults and children and three public parks. Aquasplash, a park on the water where is possible to jump off from tall springboards and then to go up again from the swimmingpools to slip down from long and exciting blue slides. Gulliverlandia, famous theme park where is possible to make an amusement and instructive dive in the past to the discovery of the secret of the dinosaurs' world, of the Middle Age and other historical epoches. Luna Park Strabilia, a fair rich of attractions and amusing merry-go-rounds. For the fun of the children there are the Gommosi, a world of soft rubber on which to jump, and the Parco Junior, where the adults can relax walking amoung the fountains surrounded by a rich vegetation. Parco Zoo Punta Verde, an enchanted oasis, rich in vegetation and crossed by streams and small lakes, with animals coming from the whole world. The Parco Hemingway, a wonderful piece of land, created as a memorial to the American writer who, fascinated with the beauty of this land, defined Lignano the "Florida of Italy". More than 4000 forest trees in 4 hectares of land equipped with a jogging path, a playground for children and a small anfitheatre. In 1987, on occasion of the world conference "For a International Agreement on Children's rights" promoted in Lignano by UNICEF, was opened a second park, the Parco Unicef, dedicated "to all children in the world" with an open-air swimming pool, skating ring, minigolf and a small square. Arena Alpe Adria, opened in 1987, is like an archeological find of an ancient theatre, among the terraces of which grow spontaneous vegetation.
Lignano offers a big choice between acquatic sports, horse riding and bicycle excursions for which there is a cycle lane. A part of this lane runs along the sea and connect all three resorts.
Behind the thin and golden sand of Lignano there is other to discover. The charming Lagoon of Marano, an ecosystem almost unique in the world, a shelter to some of the beautiful bird species of the Adriatic Sea. This is a wild and untouched area in which the presence of men is attested only by fishermen buildings like the "casoni", the origin of which are lost in time. Several resurgent rivers, rich of water and partially navigable , flow into the lagoon of Marano. Particularly rich of landscape and environmental beauty is the Stella River, whose mouth has been placed under protection as a shelter and repopulation oasis for the acquatic, migratory and sedentary birdlife.
